Teamster mechanics at United Airlines have voted by 93% to reject management’s final offer and authorize the IBT to move to strike.  This video of a rally at the San Francisco United base shows the unity and determination of the rank and file and their national negotiating committee.

Over 87% of the 9000 mechanics cast a ballot on line or by phone to send a clear message of solidarity.  The mechanics’ bargaining committee includes former Continental Airlines workers as well as former United Airlines workers, and they have stood together as management sought to sell the substandard contract.

In the past mechanics have taken concessions when the airline was in trouble; now that the airline is making fat profits, the time for concessions is long past.  Yet management proposed a two-tier wage scale for new hires.

These skilled Teamsters have endured frozen wages, loss of pensions, subcontracting of jobs, and are fed up and taking a stand to win a contract that sets the pace in the industry.

Rallies have been held at some bases and should spread to all to show management it’s time to bargain seriously or face a work stoppage.
